The History Of Gifting Flowers

by Daniel Halliway

Giving flowers or bouquets is probably the best means to express one’s emotions. Flowers and bouquets have come to be used for several purposes, from congratulating someone on his or her birthday or anniversary to conveying an apology, or even to just see a smile on someone’s face.

It is believed that this custom has origins in ancient traditions whose evidence has been dug up by excavators at excavation sites. History, myths and folklore dating back to ancient China, Greece, Rome and Egypt show flowers to be an integral part of social rituals. Gifting flowers was thought to be the best way to communicate one’s thoughts in these cultures. In fact, in ancient Greek legends, some flowers have even been given a divine status.

The practice of gifting flowers passed down to the Middle Ages, with the French and the English holding the custom strong. Today as we have assigned meaning to each flower, we are in fact echoing an ancient Turkish custom imported into Europe by the French and the British.

The tradition of flower gifting touched new heights in the Victorian era. Exhibiting emotions verbally and publicly was against the tradition during the Victorian era, and thus people used subtle means to demonstrate their emotions in the form of gifting flowers or bouquets.

The present rules of giving flowers or bouquets were laid down during this era. For instance, a bouquet of red roses bought from a florist would evoke a rather unfavourable reaction form your beloved if you gifted it to her upside down. Red roses, that otherwise symbolize love, can symbolize anger if presented upside down. These rules were so in fashion that in the’th century, many books about the language of flowers were published and widely read.

This custom continues till the present day, where people give flowers to others to express their sentiments. Through constant changes over the years, we have reached a stage where a lot of flowers now have some significance and giving flowers or bouquets has to be done according to fixed rules and regulations. Gifting a bouquet of red roses is believed to be an expression of love, on the other hand lilies are considered as representing beauty and purity. On the other hand, a yellow rose depicts friendship while a single marigold symbolizes sorrow.

The history of gifting flower remains as time passes by. In some countries, it might have once seemed inappropriate for a woman to give flowers to a man. Today it no longer registers as out of the ordinary. There are also other ways of delivering flowers. Virtual or real flowers are instantly available through the Internet. Through advancement of science and technology, flowers can now easily bloom all year-round.

Once, only particular flowers could be grown only in particular regions or terrains, which is not the case in this progressive era of science and technology. Any good Singapore flower shop will offer a multitude of flower varieties that are both regional and exotic in nature, and are appropriate for communicating your intimate emotions in the most elegant manner.
