One of the most widespread religions in the world, Buddhism derives its fundamental principles from the teachings of the Buddha. The followers of Buddhism are expected to show unconditional love for all and try to attain the Ultimate Truth.
These fundamentals of Buddhism are reflected in the rites practised during a Buddhist funeral. After the death of a person in a Buddhist family, certain rites have to be practised in order to ensure that the departed soul is elevated to a higher stage in afterlife. The positive energies of the deceased are invoked to pray and wish the best for the dead person’s life cycle beyond this birth.
The funeral rituals begin with giving the deceased a traditional wash. Monks are invited to chant different religious scriptures, which are believed to give the deceased the correct guidance to achieve spiritual liberation. Then Buddha’s teachings that emphasize on the importance of kindness and compassion are read out loud by the monks. Meanwhile, the body is prepared for the final rites. The deceased is normally provided with some money placed in his casket by the family. This is believed to help the deceased cross the River of Three Hells to reach his ultimate destination.
Then the casket is displayed to the family and friends to allow them to pay their respects by placing it at the altar. Visitors are expected to pray for the dead person and the family and friends give their condolences. The monks performing the ritual keep chanting the sutras along with the proceedings. After the chanting is over, people present at the ceremony bow at the altar. The family members then thank the visitors for sharing their sorrow by distributing gifts to them.
Once these rituals are carried out, the deceased may then be either buried or cremated in accordance with the beliefs of the family. These rites are meant to allow the family to overcome their sorrow by offering prayers that will elevate the deceased to a higher pedestal of enlightenment and knowledge.
