When Is The Best Time To Replace Ink Or Toner Cartridges?

by Rahul Toulsien

The ink used in copiers, faxes and printers is called toner. Toner is installed directly into the machine, by means of a cartridge, that is made specifically for it. It is not good practice to try and use any cartridge in any machine that is not specific to it.

Printers and copiers can have their working lives extended by using the correct toner cartridge, and it’s important to know when these need replacing. It’s common for the machine to give a warning that the toner is running out before it actually needs replacing. An LED lights up, despite the fact that it is still printing ok.

In instances like this, you know the machine is able to print quite a few more copies before the ink exhausts itself, so you can actually safely print a few hundred more pages before the print quality deteriorates. To get this to go that little bit further you can shake the cartridge. This revives the level of the toner and helps to get a bit more value for money out of it. However if you are printing a big job, it is always best to insert a new cartridge if the low message appears.

Always make sure that you have a replacement cartridge available, that way if the low signal comes on, because there is nothing worse than being caught out without a spare, especially if you have a big print job pending.

I hate that feeling of having to get out 100 packs for an Annual General Meeting, only to find that in the middle of it all, you have 2000 blank copies of ruined paper and a 2 hour deadline, but no cartridge.

It is very important to remember that these ink cartridges should not be removed if they don’t need to be replaced. They are not great for the environment and they are not great for your health either. Always wash off any residue left on your skin, and if you have ever got this stuff on your clothes you will know all about what a problem that can be.

These toner cartridges also need to be used before their expiry day, even if they are unopened, so find out about recycling centers who will collect these from you. We found a very good recycling center who donated all the proceeds from this process to an animal shelter, so local charities may also be willing to help you out too.

No matter how interested you are in finding out how toner cartridges work, do not try and dismantle them as there are always specific local rules as to disposal. They need to be recycled correctly as they cannot be put in the ground, due to contamination issues.

Be careful when handling toner ink cartridges. Pay attention to the manufacturers guidelines and you will have no problems. Should a problem arise, you should either simply phone the toner manufacturer or a recycling company for instructions.
